I don't think there is any time of year that is better than another when it comes to quilts. They are highly collectible, and serve both decorative and functional needs. Designed originally as an alternative to a blanket, quilts have been traditionally used atop beds, and quilts are made to fit standard bed sizes: twin, full, queen, king, and sometimes even California king. Their designs can range from cozy and quaint to formal and elegant. Selecting a quilt to cover a bed sets the design theme for the room.
Thanks to the ingenuity of quilt owners, these American-made creations found their way into other rooms in the home. They make charming tablecloths, in the living room or dining room!
And quilts are a wonderful way to add more pattern, color, and function to a living room. Spread on the back of the couch, quilts are decorative yet easily accessible for an afternoon nap.
In a child's bedroom that is furnished with twin beds, using the same quilt on both beds lends a cohesiveness to the room. And, depending on the liking of the youngsters and the homeowners, those quilts can be traditional or contemporary.
There are many patterns sewn and top-stitched into quilts. Log cabin, around the world, sawtooth, Jacob's ladder, and Irish chain are but a few. One of my favorites is the yo-yo pattern which is pictured in the photograph below.
Regardless of the pattern or colors you choose, including a quilt in any room says to all who enter the room, "Welcome Home!"
